An Update from the JICS Summer Lab Camp

Children in hats explore greenery, crouched on a forest floor. One wears a "SUMMER LAB CAMP 2023" shirt. Painted rocks nearby.

At this time one year ago, a small group of parents and administrators asked a simple question: Can we really offer a little slice of JICS to the wider community?

Fast forward to July 2025, and the answer was a resounding YES! Together, we created something extraordinary—a summer experience that exceeded our wildest expectations.

We welcomed 170 campers across 5 programs, representing more than 60 public and independent schools from across the GTA. Our incredible staff —OISE graduate students and beloved JICS educators—brought the magic of JICS to summer, making every day a joyful learning adventure.

As a pilot project, the camp operated with flexibility around University of Toronto policies. Moving forward, a fuller integration will require compliance with additional requirements and costs. This means more time and resources than our small volunteer team can provide before next summer.

So, here’s the honest truth: we won’t be running camp in Summer 2026.But don’t worry—we’re far from done! We’re already exploring exciting possibilities for Summer 2027, and we can’t wait to share what’s next.

Acknowledgement of Traditional Land

We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
